This paper analyses the experience of hyperinflation on three different levels: first on the level of the individual consumer, particularly of foreigners, for whom shopping in Germany came close to paradise since their purchasing power was greatly enhanced. Second, the article focuses on relations between consumers and retailers, particularly in frontier regions, where the purchasing power of foreign consumers just beyond the border drove inflation rates up and engendered massive local conflicts in which the city administrations tried to mediate. Third administrative processes and procedures provoked by hyperinflation are discussed. It will be asked how far hyperinflation led to administrative and structural changes of longer duration. Particular attention is directed towards investments in energy utilities. The regional focus will be on cities in South Germany, particularly border cities.
